The coyote is a wild animal that shares a kinship with the wolf and the fox. In fact, in size, it is in the middle of both. They are known to be animals that get along well with the environment, which has allowed the development of a great variety of subspecies throughout the world. Among the best-known coyote subspecies are the Mexican, plains, and California valley coyotes.  

Another identifying characteristic is the color of their fur, which ranges from gray to dark yellow.  Coyotes can live in mountainous areas, wooded areas, or swamps. They are animals that adapt easily to any environment, so they can also be seen in urban areas. Experts even assert that instead of decreasing due to human intervention and hunting in their habitat, coyotes are still on the increase. 

Due to their nature, they are considered carnivorous animals. However, this is closely related to the environment and the availability of food. A coyote's diet can vary between birds, mammals, reptiles, fish, arthropods, and some seeds or fruits. When coyotes break into farms or housing developments, there is a risk that they will carry out hunting within the area, affecting farm animals such as rabbits, sheep, cattle, or even domestic pets. To avoid these events, people seek to chase them away or trap them. 

According to research, coyotes are usually associated with badgers to obtain better results when hunting. In addition, they tend to be nocturnal, fast, and cunning animals. If you want to catch a coyote, you must follow a series of steps and use strategic points for this purpose. 

Aspects to consider before trapping a coyote

If at any time you need to catch a coyote, here you have the following considerations:

• Comply with the regulations established by law for hunting or trapping a coyote.

Each territory establishes regulations for hunting coyotes. Considering that in many places they are considered a pest and are not in danger of extinction, there are not many restrictions. However, the hunter is requested to follow a series of rules regarding the instruments to be used and the hunting method. 

When trying to capture a coyote, traps are usually used. They must have the name and address of the person who set them, their claws must be adequate to avoid injuring the coyote, and they should not be placed in places where people or domestic animals are present. In addition, the traps must have a validation permit before being placed and it is the user's obligation to check them daily. 

• Run a previous study of the area, so you can find the strategic points for traps

Coyotes usually return to the same place, it is important to make a study of the areas where they usually go. Some strategic places within the farms are the limits of the fences, visible trails where coyote tracks can be seen.

Steps to catch a coyote

• Once the location is established, a hole should be dug where the trap will go. It is important that it looks as natural as if another animal had dug it to store food. 
• The bait should be placed at a safe distance from the trap to avoid trapping birds of prey. Contaminated meats can be used, i.e., aromatic meats (skunk, beaver, lynx, among others). You can also use commercially sold baits with beaver or servant essences. There are also homemade baits, such as rotten eggs, or physiological bait, such as fox urine or coyote excrement. 
• There are also flat or sticky traps with scents. The trap should be placed perpendicularly to the path left by the coyote's wandering. 
• The trap should be checked daily. Once the coyote is captured, you should the wildlife department for relocation or euthanasia. Remember to take precautions and do not get too close, it could be dangerous.
